FORB’s response to EIS and updates to the current bridge preservation actions.

October 2022U.S. Coast Guard issues a final EIS on BNSF’s proposal to build a new rail bridge and demolish the old.

November 2022North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality asks the public to comment on a water quality permit for bridge construction.

North Dakota Department of Water Resources considers granting BNSF a Sovereign Lands Permit to construct a rail bridge on the riverbed. BNSF needs approval from the State Historical Board for bridge demolition.

Friends of the Rail Bridge (FORB) issues comments and will take legal action regarding:

  • Factual errors and legal issues

  • Pier placement causing silting, ice jams, and flooding

  • State ownership of the riverbed and historic bridge

FORB supports BNSF’s desire to build a new rail bridge. FORB’s legal action paves a path forward for preservation of the historic 1883 bridge in coexistence with a new one.
